In honor of black history month, I would like to dedicate this post to all the forgotten enslaved people and emancipated African Americans who probably had a hand in building this magnificent house. The absolute date of when the house was built is unknown but we do know it was before 1830 which is only three years after the abolishment of slavery in New York. We know that the original owner of this house was an abolitionists who was adamantly against slavery. We also know that Sophia Moore was born a slave who bought her own freedom and lived here in the house as a paid servant. I think of her often as these are the same stairs she would have climbed up and down everyday.
To Sophia Moore and countless other African Americans who have slipped through the cracks of history, we honor and thank you for your endless contributions.
